Which is why I always include the original chalkboard, don't count corners (or any set plays for that matter), and have only done this style of graphic for midfielders. Doing one for goalkeepers would be beyond worthless.

The graphic with Gerrard as an attacking midfielder (against West Ham last season) looks a lot different than when he's played as a CM. Which is why I highlighted that as well.

There are a ton of caveats with statistics, and even more caveats with this style of graphic (and the chalkboards themselves). Each pass is a snapshot without context. I do try to make that clear.

But there are still some interesting things that can be divined, not to mention I just enjoy the graphics in and of themselves.natehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10043601945557998732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-6876315673753842792011-03-05T11:23:46.551-05:002011-03-05T11:23:46.551-05:00the problem with using a central point as referenc...the problem with using a central point as reference to whether a pass is forward or backwards comes with the position of the player on the pitch. A goalkeeper will play 99.9% of his passes forward, Lucas as a defensive midfielder will play the majority of passes forwards, Gerrard as an attacking midfielder will find himself operating further upfield to the right and left of the pen area meaning a sideways pass/cross towards goal should be counted forward and not sideways, whatever way you do it, it's wrong to read so much into this method.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-52558069987570878332011-03-03T13:20:06.834-05:002011-03-03T13:20:06.834-05:00I'm definitely not a fan of Gerrard in the CM ...I'm definitely not a fan of Gerrard in the CM position. I would prefer him at RM. The looming question though is if not Gerrard then whom? Lucas? Maybe. We have never been able to replace the laser beam accuracy and vision that Xabi Alonso possessed. At this stage, I am open to trying something different. The problem with taking Gerrard out of CM is forcing him to stay in another position and not roam all over the pitch.CSDhttp://paisleygates.comnoreply@blogger.com
