You cannot imagine just how deep the scapegoating of Lucas goes, from the first whistle, every touch, it's "fuckin shite, fuckin shite that Lucas". Every pass, especially short ones to help circulate the ball, "fuckin shite he is".

A whole match of this and then suddenly at the end he rises majestically, unmarked, and there's this split second where everyone is preparing for that sudden ecstatic jolt of cognitive dissonance where their brains jump the rails and suddenly they all know today was the day he'd come good--and just like that the chance is missed, the points are dropped, and the words are half spat, "fuckin shite that Lucas" as everyone troops out into the rain.drewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16041903590665426891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-35801094359639356802009-11-21T16:54:44.445-05:002009-11-21T16:54:44.445-05:00I'm not a Lucas hater, but God... I'm done...I'm not a Lucas hater, but God... I'm done with the Lucas - Mascherano middle partnership. It's about time Lucas took a seat on the bench. I can accept him as a squad player, but we have absolutely nothing coming from the middle and it shows.Marlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16019605515527082418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-39669422838306030402009-11-21T12:32:50.461-05:002009-11-21T12:32:50.461-05:00Yeah, really didn't miss Voronin today.
I do ...Yeah, really didn't miss Voronin today.

I do agree that Lucas played well other than the missed late chance. But he's been playing at that level for awhile now; he's just been a convenient scapegoat. He's a decent defensive midfielder, even if he commits one or two chippy unnecessary fouls. He looks to quickly move the play forward, and gets from box-to-box better than Alonso. His understanding with Mascherano is definitely improving, and Mascherano's improvement in form since Argentina's WC qualification's definitely helped.

But this really isn't news. He's a decent young player who's still developing. I wish he would have taken that winning chance; it could have been a huge turning point in the fans' eyes.

As JP implied (I think), Kuyt was the most disappointing. I blame myself, as I added him to my fantasy team when Torres picked up that injury. He hasn't been anywhere near his best for a couple of months, has rarely threatened the keeper, and is losing possession way too easily in the opposition half.

It might not be coincidental that Johnson's been in and out of the side over the same period, but I think Kuyt needs a rest – or a change in position as I suggested in the 'Copy Chelsea' post – once Benayoun, Aqua, and Riera are fully fit.natehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10043601945557998732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-16542252551903300232009-11-21T11:57:01.769-05:002009-11-21T11:57:01.769-05:00Emile Heskey: asshole.Emile Heskey: asshole.BackBergtthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01916269531937171514noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-46607087032216344582009-11-21T11:47:45.845-05:002009-11-21T11:47:45.845-05:00Lucas failed at the end, but overall I thought he ...Lucas failed at the end, but overall I thought he was excellent. His defense was spirited and his attention to forward passing was consistent. He partnership with Mascherano is starting to work.

I also think Ngog was excellent. He is deceivingly fast and tough with the ball at his feet. I have been frustrated with him to this point but now see what Rafa obviously sees in training.

Finally, does anyone miss Voronin? The Commishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04579874467224341884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-49720732174646123912009-11-21T11:36:16.144-05:002009-11-21T11:36:16.144-05:00The Beach Ball Season Rolls on! 2 major injuries/s...The Beach Ball Season Rolls on! 2 major injuries/substitutions in the first 20 that clearly threw wrenches in our works. Feel gutted for Babel as it really did look like an ankle injury - hopefully it's not too grave, but it could be a season ender. Unbelievable fortune this year.

That being said I thought we were the better team. Having Gerrard back makes the team immensely better - I can't state that loudly enough. But he's not enough and we need more match winners in there especially if Kuyt plays the way he did. (Had 2-3 good touches in the match, all in the last 15)

1 win in 10 games I think? Atrocious but hopefully things can only improve.

-jp2Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-49968901468587385432009-11-21T11:32:24.620-05:002009-11-21T11:32:24.620-05:00Yeah I'll be stunned if Aqua doesn't start...Yeah I'll be stunned if Aqua doesn't start on Tuesday.natehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10043601945557998732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-22514641946647679092009-11-21T11:19:07.831-05:002009-11-21T11:19:07.831-05:00Yeah overall I can't fault Rafa too much consi...Yeah overall I can't fault Rafa too much considering the injuries at the start. Rafa is nothing if not pragmatic, and there was no way Liverpool was keeping that tempo for 40min with only one substitute left to use.

Despite City's pressure, which could lead one to argue an equalizer was coming, the defense didn't look likely to concede until that one mistake on one set piece. Skrtel should have tracked Ade, but looked like he expected Reina to come out and claim (unlikely). And one mistake is all it takes.natehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10043601945557998732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779660.post-12927490752200309992009-11-21T10:52:30.493-05:002009-11-21T10:52:30.493-05:00Kyrgiakos should have been on Ade on the set piece...Kyrgiakos should have been on Ade on the set pieces, he shut him down the entire game. Pelligrino needs to pay for the egregious wrongs he's committing against this team's defensive history, Christ.

Was really disappointed to see us drop into the shell after going ahead, how could anyone think this game was going to finish 1-0? Astonishing bad decision.BackBergtthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01916269531937171514noreply@blogger.com
